Tel un documentaire expérimental, entre Dziga Vertov et Jean-Luc Godard, en passant par tout un univers graphique issu des données extraites des expériences scientifiques du projet DSYNC réalisées sur le groupe de musique MILESDAVISQUINTETORCHESTRA!, ce moyen métrage explore aussi les notions de “désynchronisation temporelle”, de “phase” et de “polyrythmie”.
Mêlant peintures numériques, voix-off issues d’entretiens et portraits, moments de jeux et de vie, il remet ainsi en question le rapport du spectateur aux images d’un documentaire : entre l’explicatif et le didactique qui synchronisent le public à son propos et qui l’empêchent de s’en extirper sous peine d’en perdre le fil, il verse aussi dans l’expérimentation visuelle pour le déconcerter, lui faire chercher un sens, un rythme voire s’évader dans ses propres pensées, et ainsi : se déphaser.
Like an experimental documentary, somewhere between Dziga Vertov and Jean-Luc Godard, this medium-length film explores notions of “temporal desynchronization”, “phase” and “polyrhythm”, using data extracted from the scientific experiments carried out on the MILESDAVISQUINTETORCHESTRA! in the “DSYNC” project.
Blending digital paintings, voice-overs from interviews and portraits, moments of play and of life, it questions the viewer’s relationship to documentary images: between the explanatory and didactic, which synchronize the audience to the subject and prevent them from getting out of it or losing the thread, it also uses visual experimentation to disconcert them, make them search for a meaning, a rhythm, even escape into their own thoughts, and thus: get out of phase.

Artiste visuel et ingénieur-chercheur en mathématiques appliquées à l’imagerie 3D, Romain AL. collabore avec de nombreux artistes et collectifs du monde des musiques improvisées, expérimentales et du jazz. Membre du collectif COAX et fondateur du collectif LÜDICKE, il a composé notamment des performances numériques pour des formes hybrides telles que le trio “art et science” TAI YANG & AL, l’installation/performance via “smartphones” @TABLEE, CIRCLES (variations sur 5 tableaux de Fabienne VERDIER), la composition immersive We Use Cookies & AL., une création vidéo pour l’Orchestre National de Jazz, le duo Linda Oláh & AL., le spectacle dispersif MiMo… Ainsi que des films musicaux.

As a visual artist and research engineer in mathematics, Romain AL. collaborates with numerous artists and collectives in the world of improvised, experimental and jazz music. As a member of the COAX collective and founder of the LÜDICKE collective, he has composed digital performances for hybrid forms such as the “art and science” trio TAI YANG & AL., the installation-performance via “smartphones” @TABLEE, CIRCLES (variations on 5 paintings by Fabienne VERDIER), the immersive composition We Use Cookies & AL., a video creation for the Orchestre National de Jazz, the duo Linda Oláh & AL., the dispersive show MiMo… as well as musical films.
